If you’ve gone to a nightclub or turned on the radio, it’s highly likely that you’ve come into contact with a great DJ. DJing is a career that takes hard work, perseverance, and a lot of practice. It can be glamorous at times, but that’s not why you should jump into this type of industry. If you truly love music and the idea of performing for a crowd, producing tracks, or mixing music to create new beats to dance to, a DJ career may be a better choice than you think.
- DJing is a career that offers versatility. One of the great perks of being a DJ is that the job is versatile. You can work anywhere in the world at any time of the day or night as long as you market yourself appropriately so that you can land gigs. Many are drawn to the idea of being able to create their own schedule; one that includes partying all night and being able to sleep all day long. While DJing may look like fun and games, it isn’t all a walk in the park. It can be tough and as time goes on, you have to have the resiliency to be versatile and try new things as the career will force you to do so. Being a DJ is more than just learning how to use a DJ controller. This type of career will keep you on your toes and will require you to continuously learn more.
- DJing can open up new doors and endless possibilities. There are a lot of DJ’s in the world which makes it hard to make a living solely off of your DJ skills alone. Many DJ’s have a day job and then perform at night as a way to fulfill their passion. To be able to make it as a full-time DJ takes a great deal of time and skill. Not just with knowing how to use equipment properly, but you may meet radio producers, song writers, or other famous people in the industry who may have an interest in what you can offer. A DJing career can open up new doors and endless opportunities whether it is the ability to travel all over the world to play your music, or collaborating with an artist or producer to create the next Top 40 radio hit. The sky is the limit with this career as long as you are willing to work for it.
- DJing gives you the freedom to evolve over time. If there is one thing that is for certain, nothing stays the same. As time goes on, people change as does the world around them. Being a DJ is no different as it allows you the freedom to evolve over time in a way that is not constricting. For example, if you are a DJ and have been blessed with a new child, you can work at night and stay home during the day with your baby. When the child is grown, perhaps you will want to work in the radio industry as a VJay instead of a DJ so that you can work while your child is at school. DJing gives you the ability to change your career as your life changes.
The hardest part of this job is to adapt with continuing changes in music. We have an ingrained sense and taste for a particular kind of music but we cannot keep on changing our music preferences indefinitely.
Being a DJ is super hard! On top of picking the music for the mood, you have to take in consideration the people that are there! Not only do you have to pick songs they like, you also have to pick songs that YOU think they might like. Not everyone can do that, to be honest. I salute all the DJs out there!
