A garden can be anything from a play area for the kids, a place to grow vegetables and flowers, or another job on a never-ending list. Hopefully, your outdoor space doesn’t fall into the last category, but even if it does, all is not lost!

Gardens are a luxury not everyone has access to, but if you do have a garden, here’s how you can transform yours into a place where relaxation is possible.

Comfortable Seating

You won’t want to spend much time outdoors if there is nowhere comfortable to sit. Perching on a wall or sitting on wet grass isn’t relaxing or ideal. The best way to let your stress float away is by buying a comfortable garden chair

What style of chair you buy will depend on your needs, but most people enjoy reclining garden loungers and rattan patio chairs. Look for chairs that meet your budget and are weatherproof. To keep them in good condition, ensure they are stored somewhere dry over winter; lounging in a chair that’s full of holes is unlikely to help you achieve a Zen state of mind.

A Table

Whether you enjoy reading novels or drinking prosecco in the garden, a table is a must-have. Buy a small side table so you have somewhere to put your glass of wine, romance novel, or puzzle book. Consider investing in a patio furniture set that comes with a dining table or side table, so everything matches, and you can invite friends over to share your relaxed vibe.

Shelter from the Sun

The sun is good for us. We need exposure to the sun so we can absorb essential Vitamin D but cooking in the sun isn’t comfortable or relaxing after a while. On a hot day, a parasol or some other kind of sunshade is essential.

Sail shades are inexpensive and easy to fix on a tree or the side of your house. They can also be moved if necessary. Pergolas are another option. And then there are garden awnings, which are fixed to a wall. These are more expensive but are longer lasting and useful if you like to sit outside all year round with a cup of coffee.

Privacy

Nothing is more likely to puncture your Zen balloon than a nosey neighbor staring over the fence or trying to start a conversation while you’re immersed in a book. The quickest way to create privacy is by installing a tall fence around the perimeter of your garden. If you can wait a bit longer, plant tall shrubs or a hedge around the area where you like to sit. It may take a while, but eventually, you’ll have privacy and a buffer from loud noises.

Light and Heat

Finally, it is fun to chill in the garden on a warm summer’s evening, mosquitoes notwithstanding.  But to see properly, you need light. And if it’s chilly, you’ll want a heat source.

Invest in a chiminea or fire pit and string solar lights around your seating area.

Try these garden fixes and before long, the backyard will become your favorite place to be.
