We’re all taught algebra, how to find the area of a circle and what an artist is trying to illustrate with their use of color, but not always the really useful things. These are where we have to figure things out ourselves by making mistakes along the way. Here are a few things that everyone should know how to do in life…

Who to contact in different circumstances

We all know to call 911 if there is an emergency, but what about other serious situations? For example, if you were involved in an accident in Ohio, would you know to contact a Columbus based PI law firm? If your boiler broke and you needed to claim on your home insurance, or your car broke down on the motorway, would you have the right contact details to hand? In all of these events, you need to know who to contact. It’s best to store all this information in an address book or diary that you always keep with you, so it is there for when you need it.

Basic first aid

No one is asking you to become a fully qualified paramedic, but there are a few pieces of basic first aid that everyone should know. For example, how to deal with heavy bleeding, what to do if you have a sprained ankle, and how to deal with minor burns. It’s essential to know these skills, as there are some steps that could save a life or help someone manage a severe injury if it came to it. At the very least, it’s vital to know how not to make things worse.

Light a fire

Even if you’re not a particularly outdoorsy person, it is always useful to know how to light a fire, just in case. If you ever find yourself lost in the wilderness, a fire will keep you warm and help you cook food, as well as give you a light source, so it is worth the few minutes it takes to learn this skill.

Make a pasta dish

As long as you have pasta and some leftover vegetables, you can create a really delicious, cheap, and easy meal that is filling and will go a long way. If you have to feed several people, or you’re short on cash, a pasta dish is a perfect answer, and it doesn’t require a lot at all. Everyone should know how to make a simple, tasty pasta dish from limited ingredients, for those meals when you haven’t yet been shopping or are trying to save money.

How to change a tire

Sure, you can call up for help if you don’t know how to change a tire, but it’s much easier (and more fulfilling!) to do it yourself. It’s not very complicated to change a tire, but it’s something that is important to get right, so as soon as you learn to drive, ask someone to teach you how to change your tire.

Practical knowledge is a lot more useful in everyday life than being able to conjugate a verb, so be sure to hone your life skills and learn the things that are going to make your life much easier in the long run.
