The fire ant has the same general appearance as many other ants. However, unlike many other ants, the fire ant is actually a stinging ant. This is one ant you don’t want to bite you. If it does it will feel like you’ve been stung, similar to being burnt by fire.  It’s normal for the bite area to swell and become irritated.

The problem is compounded by the fact that you’re likely to be attacked by more than one fire ant, they are much more aggressive than ‘normal’ ants. The result is multiple bites that can induce dizziness, fever, or even urticaria.

If you’re concerned about allergic reactions you should get your local exterminators to deal with the issue for you.

One thing is certain if you’re facing an issue with fire ants you need to act quickly. If you leave them the issue will only get worse.

  • Bait Trap

Borax is an effective ant killer. Simple purchase ant bait that has borax as the main ingredient. You can then put this food source near where you see the fire ants. They’ll consume it and take it back to their nest, effectively killing the entire colony.

You’ll need to monitor the bait and top it up as required, you’ll also want to watch the activity at any known nest, to make sure they are dying off. It can take several days to kill them all.

  • Cayenne pepper

It’s funny to think that hot pepper is effective at eliminating the fire of a fire ant! You’ll need a quarter of a gallon of water that must be brought to the boil. Once it’s boiling slice up four cayenne peppers and place them in a glass jar. Pour the boiling water over them and leave it for 24 hours, allowing the water to absorb the heat of the peppers.

You can then transfer it to a spray bottle and spray ants you see. Or, you can pour the entire jar of water over the anthill. This won’t just kill the ants in the colony, it will also ruin the hill, any survivors will need to build a new anthill.

  • Lemon Water

Another option is to simply mix lemon juice and water in a spray bottle. You’ll need the same amount of lemon juice and water. Shake the mixture vigorously and then spray the areas where you know fire ants walk frequently.

The lemon will disguise scents, ensuring the ants get lost. It will also dehydrate the ants, causing them to die.

  • Diatomaceous Earth

This natural compound is effective at killing all types of ants, including fire ants. The fine fossilized remains will pierce the skin of the ant. It will then absorb the moisture inside the ant, effectively dehydrating it and killing it.

Diatomaceous earth is incredibly effective and harmless to humans. Simply sprinkle it around the anthill, into the anthill, and along any pathways you know the ants use. They’ll all be dead within a few days.
