Ever since J.K. Rowling published the first Harry Potter book in 1997, it molded a generation of readers with ripe imaginations. Decades later, the magic is still alive and stronger than ever and it is something to hold on to in a world filled with pain and strife. Muggles may never get to experience what it is like to ride a broom, play Quidditch, cast a spell or brew potions, but dreaming is free and the Harry Potter world makes a great party theme.

Even though the HP party theme has been popular in the last few years, there’s no such thing as ‘overdone,’ especially among fans. Lucky for you, the book franchise’s world is so vast that even if you’ve had parties with the same theme in the past, there’s always something new for you to try. The great thing about having a theme for gatherings

Themed parties are always better than those without because it sets the mood of the party, decorating is easy when you know what to follow, and it makes the whole thing memorable. Some themes are easier than others. Themes like Harry Potter, Paw Patrol, Minecraft, and other popular themes based on shows and video games have a lot of following so cheap party supplies can be found easily.

If you plan on doing a Harry Potter party again, but want something more chill, consider getting pre-made plates, cups, and napkins to make your life easier. Here are more tips and ideas for your next magical party:

Make Your Own Wand Station

Instead of slaving yourself away for days, making wands for all your guests, have them make them one for themselves. Set up a station where they can customize their wands according to their liking by providing them with paint and decor. It’s completely optional, but no aspiring witch or wizard would want to miss out on having a wand on a Harry Potter-themed birthday.

Another great idea is that if you have leftover wands from your last party is to let the wand pick the witch or wizard. You can do this by blindfolding any person who wants one and have them pick blindly. No peeking and absolutely no take-backs because the wand chose them

Create Your Own Imaginary House

House rivalries also exist outside of the book and movies. Fans tend to group themselves among their brethren whether they are in Ravenclaw, Slytherin, Gryffindor or Hufflepuff. It can be a source of friendly rivalry, but it can be a headache, especially among fans who take it to the extreme by being in-character all the time.

While you can’t control how protective your guests will be of their respective houses, you can ease the divide by creating your own imaginary house. You can choose to pre-make one by choosing the name, animal sigil, and characteristics and at your party, you can announce it to everyone. This ensures the unity among your guests now that they’re from the same house.

Magical Creatures Hunt

Hosting a backyard Quidditch is fun and all but it is not ideal for all climates. If it’s too chilly to roam outdoors or if you prefer to stay inside by the fire, you can still play games using little plastic figures to represent famous magical creatures from the books and movies. It’s basically an indoor scavenger hunt and you’re free to make your own rules.

You can hide as many ‘creatures’ as you can and have guests collect as many as they can find. Another way to do it is to let them follow clues to seek the ultimate magical creature. Depending on how difficult you want the game to be, it is at least an hour’s worth of fun activity that a person of any age can join in.

‘Potions’ Class

A great way to insert learning and science in a party is by holding a pretend Potions class. This is perfect for a children’s birthday parties where young minds can marvel at fizzing potions from combining bicarbonate soda and white vinegar. Food coloring can make it colorful and fun. Check out this article on how to set it up.

Butterbeer Ice Cream

This is a treat for birthday parties held in the summer. Since you can either drink butterbeer hot or cold, turning it into ice cream is a refreshing way to cool down in the heat. You can opt to have the drinkable butterbeer, but if you want something new, this is an interesting take. Additionally, using sugar cones means less waste to clean up, so it’s a win. Here is a recipe you can follow.
