Scheduling a routine eye examination with your optometrist is a smart idea. During this eye exam, your eye doctor will take the time to check your vision as well as look for any of the potential issues that may occur in the eyes. We may assume that our eyes are fine, but until we have an eye doctor take a look, there could be serious problems going on and we would have no idea.
But how often should you schedule your eye exam? This will depend on your age, whether you have had eye problems in the past, or if you wear glasses or contact lenses. Let’s take a closer look at how you should schedule your eye exams.
Childhood Vision Screening
It is recommended that children come in for their first eye exam when they are about six months old. They are then asked to come back for their third birthday and then again before they enter first grade. If there are potential problems with the eyes before that time, the child may need to come back in. Once the child turns to age six, they will be able to come in for an eye exam every other year and be fine until they begin to have vision problems.
Adults Vision Screenings
As long as the individual does not have any risk situations around their eyes or an issue with their glasses or contact lenses prescriptions, they can come in to get their eyes checked once every other year. This can continue from age six to sixty. Once the individual reaches the age of sixty, eye conditions are more common and they may need to visit their eye doctor every year or more.
Any child or adult who has a rapidly changing eye prescription or other eye conditions should come in for a checkup more often. This is often every year, but they should talk with their eye doctor to get on the right schedule.
Signs I Need an Eye Exam
There are several signs that you can look for when it comes to getting your eye exam. Some of these include:
● You start to notice your vision is becoming blurred.
● You have frequent headaches, which is often caused by strain to the eyes.
● Bright flashes or floaters show up in your eyes. A few are fine but if there are a bunch of new ones, it is time to check into the eyes.
● Sensitivity to light. If you notice it is getting bad all of a sudden, it is time to get it fixed.
● Difficulty when driving at night: When your vision gets bad enough that you struggle to see at night, it is time to have an eye exam to see if something is wrong.
