What a refreshing change to read a heroic story featuring a Filipino hero fighting the good fight in the beautiful chocolate hills of Bohol, Philippines. Jael and I took some time to read this children’s book written by Paul Bacera.

We enjoyed the tale of Isdaman conquering one monster after another.  Jael relished the fight scenes and witty banter between the protagonist and enemy. Since our primary language at home is English he learned a few new Tagalog words in the story.

Me: “What did you like about the story?”

Jael: “I liked the rhyming and the Tagalog words. I learned some new words and the fight scenes were captivating.

The illustrations were quite entertaining and perfectly represented the vividness yet subtlety of the Filipino landscape. Having books like these helps to correctly impress the traditional culture we hold dear while expressing the values we all maintain today even in this modern society. The diligence and perseverance that Filipinos have for their fellow man and love of country is fully apparent in Isdaman.

At 52 pages it’s a bit of a read for kids but I think it helps to have kids read it aloud with you or to do the reading in various voices to keep their attention. Though with the illustrations and funny dialogue it’s not much of a challenge to keep them interested.

As a whole the book is quite impressive, with humor and adventure as it’s leading engaging value. This is a story I would encourage kids to read to appreciate the Philippines, its culture and people and also as a lesson in life to be taken from.
