As a kid I loved to draw. I would draw freestyle or copy images I liked. I remember drawing Snoopy on a mailbox and that was my first drawing that I did all on my own. I made tons of different art projects, felt bags shaped into different animals and the like. I’ve always considered myself artistic with a deep appreciation for art.

When I learned Van Gogh’s Alive Experience  exhibit was hitting our shores I made sure to get tickets to see it. It was held at One Bonifacio Hight Street in BGC Manila.

Upon entering the exhibit you’re shown a sample of his works and descriptions to each piece. There’s also a short history of his life. As I read about the life he lead and the mood and inspiration of his paintings I eagerly took in all the details  could.

The inner part of the exhibit is a multimedia multi-sensory experience. It brings you on a visual journey of his life’s works which palpitates even more with the accompanying music specifically chosen for each piece.

I was in awe of the paintings and instantly I had a favorite. It used to be Starry Starry Night which is the common choice but Cafe Terrace at Night captured my heart. It was the definition of a scene that I’ve always had in my head of where I’d like to be one day.

The one small thing I note from each of his paintings through its progression is there was always hope. No matter how tiny the sliver. Truly, his work is mesmerizing and its sad that he wasn’t appreciated in his day. His later works evoked a controlled madness and deep darkness.

Art appreciation isn’t something that can be forced but it can be influenced. We can’t all be painters but we can find that small semblance of creativity in our everyday lives.
