Any topic having to do with sex is taboo, at least in our society. We aren’t as progressive as other countries but I think that’s also what makes us unique. Education and traditions can make our own approach modern but modest and educated. With over population and the rising statistics of sexual illnesses and diseases, its important we educate everyone about sexual health and safety.

Bayer, one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in the country has launched Ask Mara, a chatbot available online 24/7 through its Facebook page and Messenger app. We can privately ask different questions and do so right from our own phone.

The online advice chat has many features. From FAQs to pill reminders, we can rely on Mara to give us the information we need. Ask Mara actually represents the modern day Maria Clara and caters to women but also anyone who may have questions related to sexual and reproductive health.

Mara can you help learn about women’s reproductive health, different contraceptive methods, provide missed pill management, schedule pill reminders, and further support on related  information and resources.

Of course, Mara can provide as much information as possible but it’s always best to visit your doctor. Also Mara cannot recommend any one brand or doctor.

Since this is readily available on Facebook, as parents we must also make sure that if our kids do happen to visit and chat with Mara we follow it up with a conversation and support.

Right now, Mara only converses through English but she’ll soon be able to communicate in Tagalog and some dialects.

Bayer and Ask Mara has stated that their initiative is about improving awareness of contraception so that people can make informed decisions and choices.
