How to Get Freelance Writing Jobs: A Review of Freelance Writing Guide: What to Expect in Your First Year as a Freelance Writer

Posted on

In another life I might have been a full fledged writer. When I was younger, I had a dream of becoming one but as time went by I wasn’t able to focus on it and soon it was set aside. As an adult, blogging is my form of writing so when I was presented with an opportunity to review a book on how to get freelance writing jobs I jumped at the chance.

Freelance-Writing-Jobs-GuideFreelance Writing Guide: What to Expect in Your First Year as a Freelance Writer by Christine Rice can be a useful and helpful tool for first time writers or writers that need a bit of guidance.

I didn’t come across anything new as I had come across these ideas at some point but it does put things into perspective and can guide you to a good start by eliminating common mistakes and misunderstandings. When you first start out as a freelance writer it can be overwhelming as you’re not sure where to start, what to focus on and how to deal with rejection and criticism.

Having been a writer for about 7 years, Christine has plenty of advice to share. From creating a portfolio to job searching and tracking income and expenses she gives you a broad yet detailed idea of how to start to be a writer and how to be successful at it.

As I mentioned, the ideas presented weren’t new to me but the way that they were presented gave me insight on how I can better manage my time, get my blog out on the market and how I can earn from it. She even cites websites that you can go to for help such as where you can publish your content and free courses you can take to educate yourself.

She also further touches on topics such as ghostwriting, networking and lifestyle change that I thought were helpful. It’s a great idea to bring the book with you so you can keep track of your progress and also learn as you go.

I would recommend this book for those seriously thinking of writing as a career and those who would like to create a writer’s frame of mind.

Baby Expo Philippines 2013

Posted on

The Baby Expo Philippines is another welcome event for both families and babies. This year the expo will be “Welcoming Life, Love and Care” through a wide variety of booths and activities and discussions on responsible parenting, family planning, health and wellness, proper dieting, allergy treatments and breastfeeding.

There are plenty of activities over the course of the 3 day event which include Yoga and Zumba classes, a yaya academy, fashion show, cupcake decorating showdown and a family olympics. There will also be parenting advice from celebrities such as Dawn Zulueta, Charlene Gonzales, and Carmina Villaroel.

I was honored to attend their launch and press conference at the Big Red Barn at Fun Ranch to learn more about the event and the benefits of attending the 3 day Baby Expo.

In tow were my 3 kids, and we had just come from the TMA Homeschool Orientation also at Fun Ranch on the second floor. I had brought them along as we had a full day of activities ahead.

They enjoyed the press conference and getting a taste of a blogger’s life. The event was kid friendly with a smorgasbord of colors, a play area, cute cupcakes and a yummy buffet.

The press conference was hosted by Ms. Nina Ricci Alagao-Flores (Bb Pilipinas Universe 2000). I was surprised to learn that she already had 3 children with such a svelte figure.

She was kind, sincere and accommodating. I have to admit I was among those who asked to have a picture taken with her.

After we had gotten home, my son realized that I had had my picture taken with her and he felt bad for missing out on such an opportunity.

The speakers at the press conference were made up of a well rounded group including (L-R) Dr. Regina Carmela Y. Santiago-Aquias, MD, Obstetrics and Gynecology Consultant of The Medical City, Edric Mendoza (founder of HAPI & director of TMA and who also happened to be the speaker at the homeschool orientation that we had attended earlier that morning), David Abrenilla (CEO of Mediacom and organizer of the Baby Expo, Huiying Tan (director of Cordlife Philippines), and Maricel Cua, co-founder of MedelaMoms Philippines)

I’m hoping to get deals on Playdoh products this year because my youngest loves to create all kinds of characters. His brother and sister also enjoy making characters for him. Here’s a great set of Pixar characters that my son Bastian made for Jael.

Online Learning Games for Kids

Posted on

In this day and age, we’re surrounded by technology and I’ve had to adapt to online learning games for kids. With my 2 eldest, we used books and arts and crafts. We used our hands to create and learn at the same time. I bought plenty of books and focused on their interests.

With our youngest, Jael who’s 3 years old I’ve done the same but significantly less. He plays on the iPhone and so I make sure to only have educational apps for him to play. I’m aiming to make his exposure to technology as beneficial as possible and introducing him to learning games.

I’ve enrolled my youngest son into 2 online learning games for kids programs which are usually paid programs but I was fortunate to get to try them for free. We have a 1 month trial for each program and we’ll see which he benefits from more and most likely continue with that.

ABCmouse.com

With ABCmouse you get a full online curriculum for Preschool through Kindergarten. This covers Reading, Math, Science, Arts & Colors and Music for children ages 2-6.

Upon starting the program you can customize your child’s and parent’s avatars. Jael enjoyed the Farm and Zoo games. He loves animals and one of his favorite songs is Old MacDonald Had a Farm. We recently brought him to the Ark Avilon Zoo and he had a great time getting up close and personal with the animals there.

He also likes the puzzles and repeats the animal puzzle. You can choose the degree of difficulty during the games to see if your child is ready for the next step.

The interface is easy to use, attractive and easy to understand. Jael is at Level One which has 401 learning activities. We’ll see how we go but so far I’m liking their program.

Reading Eggs

I found out about the Reading Eggs program through Educents and I took this opportunity to sign up for a 4 week trial.

Jael has been enjoying this program a lot. The interface is not as attractive as ABCmouse but he really enjoys the ant that facilitates it. He loves the movie Ant Bully and I’m sure this is what has him interested in the talking ant. Here he learns by letters and 2 to 3 letter words.

It’s also easy to use and understand and my son is able to follow along with little guidance from me.

With your free trial you get access to Reading Eggs, Reading Eggspress and Mathseeds. Their lessons are targeted for kids between 3-13.
