My Very Own Kobo Glo

Posted on

I have been avidly reading since I can’t even remember. My love for reading spans the bedroom, the dining table, the living room, yes even the bathroom, and all places where I can get just even a few minutes of reading. I’ve held a book in my hand at least once a day since forever. I have a book collection that has increased and decreased through time for want of space.

Today, reading seems to be a lost art. Many still do it, I’m not discounting that fact but who nowadays can you say really loves to read a good book? I’m grateful to have friends I can share this passion with and even more grateful that I share it with my son.

However, space limitations and prices have become a challenge but I have found ways to circumvent that.

e-readers

My first foray into e-reading started with my Nokia X200 phone. It’s a Java phone that I was able to use for reading ebooks. How did I do it? You can read more about that here. At the time I was content to read on a very small screen that had some jumbled characters and misspelled words. When we got an iPhone from relatives in the States I switched to reading through iBooks. This was much better than having to convert and transfer books to my Nokia X200.

Then I got a Starmobile Engage TV tablet when I upgraded my Sun Cellular plan. I was thrilled to get this and looked forward to reading ebooks on that. To be fair, my reading on the Starmobile tablet was sufficient for my needs.

However, my Kobo Glo, which I have to say is one of my most prized material possessions is the perfect e reader. It is made to fit the needs of a bookaholic such as myself. It was a gift from my incredibly generous boss and his wife.

With my Kobo Glo, I can store up to 1,000 ebooks with the 2GB internal memory and if I expand I can go up to as much as 32GB making that 30,000 ebooks that I can have on my very slim and portable e reader!

I can also go on the web browser and check my email and Facebook. I love the ComfortLight feature which “illuminates the page, not your face”. It’s a very soft light that I can use when reading in bed next to my husband who I don’t want to wake as he gets up very early in the mornings to get ready for work. I can adjust the brightness and during the day just turn it off.

I can also adjust fonts, margins, and spacing. It has in-text annotations, dictionary look-ups, bookmarks, and notes. To turn the page I just tap the page which I can also choose to my liking whether I tap the middle or left and right.

When the Wifi is off the battery lasts for a very long time. I don’t really use it except for reading so the battery life is significantly longer.

Aside from purchasing ebooks through Kobo I’ve found workarounds since it does let you save your personal ebook collection via Wifi or cable.

Next on the list is a Kobo SleepCover which when opening the cover automatically awakens the Kobo Glo and closing it puts it to sleep!

What e-reader do you use?

The Life of a Flight Attendant: Review of Confessions of a Hostie

Posted on

Once upon a time I wanted to be a flight attendant. I had the height for it, some would say the look and I had enough adventure in me to want to try it. The life of an international flight attendant seemed so exciting and fascinating. Imagine getting to travel to different countries, taking in the culture and meeting new people. It does seem like a glamorous life indeed.

confessions-of-a-hostieWhen I was given the opportunity to review Confessions of a Hostie by Danielle Hugh I took the opportunity because I was really interested to learn what their life is really like. I was so engrossed in the book. I found myself finding snippets of time to get in some reading.

I found her accounts of passenger stories hilarious and at times a little sad to realize how indifferent and insensitive people can be. You realize as you read the book that flight attendants don’t just require “flying skills” but also a strong stomach, an incredible amount of patience and adaptability.

Danielle keeps the story real not keeping her heroine nice and neat but funny, capable of mistakes and as human as we all are. Reading the rude encounters she has on various trips I try to imagine if I would have the same resolve.

I’m sure it would be difficult to maintain any semblance of a family life when you are frequently on the go, in different countries on even the most sacred of holidays.

Imagine spending Christmas all the way across the world while your family is at home waiting for you to get back. It can probably be a lonely life and is most ideal for singles. I admire those that are able to work as a flight attendant and still manage to have a family.

You’re in for a funny and interesting read with this book. Her follow up More Confessions of a Hostie is next on my reading list. Stay tuned for my review on that!

A Compilation of Short Articles: Review of Articles for the Mind by Christine Rice

Posted on

articles-for-the-mind-christine-riceThere are times when I want to read but just read short articles especially in between work or while I’m having a snack. When I don’t have time to read and don’t want to get that feeling where I’m left hanging I go for these kinds of reads.

I’m reviewing another book by Christine Rice, Articles for the Mind and this book has 58 short nonfiction articles.

The short articles in this book are of a practical nature and great for applying to your everyday life. The book is sectioned into 7 parts having articles for each part. Topics in the book include Beauty and Health, Careers and Education, Family and Pets, Financial Planning, Frugal Living, and Money, Food, Holidays, and Home, Psychology, Self-Help, and Values and Writing.

Her approach to each article is very matter of fact and practical. Reading it you would think that these are obvious conclusions but they are a healthy way of reminding us how to approach situations and how to condition are way of thinking when it comes to areas we often struggle in.

I found the Family and Pets, Financial Planning, Frugal Living, and Money and Writing chapters to be most helpful in my current situation. They served as good reminders for me to try and understand others more, learn how to prioritize and how to be more creative. The Writing chapter was a quick summary of her other book that I was able to review, Freelance Writing Guide: What to Expect in Your First Year as a Freelance Writer.

If you should find yourself struggling with your weight, finding a job or with your own personal problems the other chapters will be an ideal read for you.
