For many people, 2020 has been a difficult year, especially financially. Quite a few of us have not been able to work as normal or have lost our jobs. Even those who have not seen the amount of money that is coming in go down are still worried. Having seen what can happen, they are keen to build a nest egg for their family to use during an emergency. So, today, I thought I would share a few slightly different ways to save, and maybe make, a little extra money in 2021.
Learn to fix your household appliances
Having to replace a large appliance, for example a dishwasher or fridge, can make a big hole in your finances. So, it makes sense to learn how to fix your washing machine and other white goods yourself. Provided you have the make and model number it is relatively easy to source the spares that you need. You can turn to somewhere like YouTube for help with troubleshooting the problem and carrying out the repair.
Do more DIY
On a similar theme, doing your painting, decorating and home repairs yourself will also save you money. If you do not have the right tools for the job, borrow from a friend. Or buy what you need second-hand.
Whenever possible, use materials that you already have to hand. For example, instead of buying wallpaper for a feature wall, create a collage using old posters and photos or paint yourself a mural. You will find 18 other low-cost ways to decorate a wall listed here.
Get into skill swapping
If you do not know how to do something consider giving skill swapping a try. In most countries, you will find clubs like this one that facilitate this. It is a great way to get some of the tasks you cannot do done at virtually no cost.
You do not necessarily have to have any special skills to be able to take part in a swap. There are skilled carpenters, electricians, and others out there who desperately need someone to sit with their elderly parents a couple of evenings a week so they can get a break. Or want their cooking and cleaning done. You will be amazed by the list of tasks you can get done and how much money you can save using a skill swapping network.
Give earning online a try
If you have not already done so, take a look at earning a side income online. There is a huge demand for writers, video creators, graphic designers, web developers, language coaches and a long list of other skills – consider what you could offer to the online community and thoroughly research how to gain a client base for your services.
So, there you have it four ways to make more of the money that you have.
