Surgery is a big deal for people no matter how old or young you are. Even if the doctors say that it is a minor surgery and you can go home right after it, it is still a big deal and your body will need time to recover.

It is important to know that you cannot do everything at once right after surgery, but there are plenty of things that you can do to get stronger faster and back to your normal life after surgery in no time.
1.) Don’t do too much too soon
A lot of people think that they need to be active again and moving around as normally as possible after surgery so that they are not a burden or do not appear to be weak. However, getting too active too quickly can be a major health risk. You could fall and hurt yourself even worse, cause your wound to not heal properly, and be even worse off than before surgery. Pay attention to your doctor’s directions and don’t go too fast so that you do not experience setbacks and take even longer to heal.
2.) Don’t stay in your bed or on the couch too long
While it is important to sleep and rest for a couple of days after surgery, staying in bed or on the couch is actually not the best medicine. It can cause you to have a blood clot, get dizzy when you try to get up, develop bedsores, have a pulmonary embolism, and see your muscles get weak. Even if you are tired and want to sleep, getting up and moving will make you feel better and make you feel better.
3.) Take your meds as prescribed
Skipping out on your medicine because you don’t like how it makes you feel is not smart. You are not stronger just because you are able to make it without the medicine, there is no tough-guy competition here! When you are in pain you cannot sleep, eat, or move around properly which will slow down the healing process. While you don’t want to be on the medicine longer than you have to be, it is important to take it while you need it so as to promote faster healing.
4.) Eat and drink properly
Laying around all day and taking pain medication is going to make you not have much of an appetite. However, it is vital that you get enough to eat and drink while you work on getting better. Eating properly is going to help gives your muscles the energy it needs to heal while fluids keep you hydrated which also promotes healing. When you do not fuel your body properly, your recovery slows down and getting better takes longer.
5.) Go to your rehab appointments
This could be the most vital thing on this list. You cannot tough your recovery out on your own. It is vital that you go to see your physical therapist as long as your doctor tells you too. They are trained to help your muscles get stronger and show you how to get better safely. Take your physical therapy seriously and work hard with your therapist and at home with the exercises that your therapist gives to you.
6.) Don’t drive before you are released
Your doctors know what they are talking about and it is important to listen to them. If they tell you not to drive it is because it could cause you to hurt yourself worse based on where your surgery was performed, you could have slower reaction times, or you could be a danger to yourself and others on the road. Until your doctor releases you, ask for help from others.
7.) Do your breathing exercises even if you do not think they are important
When you have surgery you are put on anesthesia so that you can sleep through the surgery. It is important to do breathing exercises that your doctor gives you so that your lugs recover from being put under. It keeps you from having mucus gather in your lungs which can lead to infections and sickness that can stall your recovery!
No matter what type of surgery you have, it is vital that you listen to your doctor and do whatever they tell you to do. They are the experts in that field, not you, and taking your recovery into your own hands can just slow the process down.
