When you finish work, naturally you want to enter relaxation mode. This means unwinding, settling down and putting the stresses of the day behind you.
One of the best ways of doing this is by taking a shower. There is scientific evidence that shows using a shower to unwind at the end of your work day will have positive impacts on your innovation and creativity.
If you have spent the day attempting to tackle a particularly challenging problem at work, treating yourself to a shower will trigger an “incubation period”. This occurs after you have focused for a long time on a particular problem, then you enter a relaxed state, the brain produces dopamine and your mind is allowed to freely wander. In this state, your subconscious, which has been working on the problem at work all day, implants its ideas into your conscious mind, offering up novel and creative solutions to your problems.
To trigger this incubation period and reap the rewards, you want to make your shower experience as relaxing as possible. Here are 5 ways to increase your relaxation in the shower and get those innovative and creative ideas flowing.
Install Glass Doors
Nothing can ruin a relaxing shower quite like a feeling of claustrophobia. Opaque doors make your shower feel like a closet and make it a much less inviting space. Install specialty glass doors to open up your showering space and give a more spacious and luxurious feel.
Use a Shower Melt
You have likely heard of a bath bomb. They release relaxing fragrances, enhancing any bath and inducing a state of relaxation. Now there are shower melts. You simply place them by the drain and as the water washes over them and melts them, they release pleasant aromas, clearing your sinuses and helping you unwind after a long day.
Dim the Lights and Add Some Background Music
Creating a relaxing environment will help you reach relaxation on the inside. Removing any harsh lighting and adding some relaxing background music can achieve that. If you don’t have a lamp, placing several candles by the mirror can create enough light to see by but not enough to ruin the relaxation.
Hang Some Lavender from the Shower Head
To increase the aesthetic merit and fragrance of your bathroom, consider tying some fresh lavender to the showerhead. When the heat and steam of the shower reach the lavender, it will release its fragrance and create a relaxing aroma. You can also hang lemongrass or eucalyptus.
Heat Up Your Towel and Robe
The relaxation doesn’t have to end when you step out of the water. Heating up your robe and towel will offer a soft and warm barrier between your damp body and the cool air outside the shower. Putting your towel in a drier on high heat for a couple of minutes will mean it is nice and toasty when you emerge from the jets and need to dry off.
Try these five techniques out for yourself next time you get home from work and see how a relaxing shower can benefit you.
