It’s odd isn’t it? To see a well know skin whitening brand proclaiming that beauty whether dark or white is beautiful. The topic and their video have become a bit controversial but maybe we can see it as the beauty of choice.
Today people are encouraged to be themselves, whatever form that may be. Whether you were born with it physically or innately. Equal respect is being called for men, women, transgender, gays and lesbians. Then there’s race, age and sex distinctions that are so often made whether by slight or overtly. When it comes down to it, I encourage inclusivity and the right to choose.
Now with that, I think that if you were born with skin you love then be proud and flaunt it. If you seek something different and feel the need to “beautify” yourself in your eyes then there are products (please choose safe ones!) that can help you.
Personally, I like my skin tone. I prefer not to get darker than the tone that I do have. I like to use whitening products to even out my skin because unfortunately I do have an uneven tone. Should I feel guilty for that? I don’t think so.
At the launch of their new campaign, I viewed the new video and though it does come across a little strong trying to say that they see all skin color as beautiful while all their products highlight whitening, I think their primary focus is to let people know that though they promote skin whitening they also have products that infuse whitening with moisturizing and protecting. Yes, a bit of a stretch but as the brand team explained each brand has a call to action and a cause to serve. This is theirs.
Excerpt from the SkinWhite team:
One would wonder why a skin whitening brand such as SkinWhite would dare to say that dark skin is beautiful. “It’s all about choice”, says Rachelle Layda, Marketing Manager for Whitening of Splash Corporation. “SkinWhite is a brand that empowers women to choose. A choice to define their own standard of beauty. If you choose to have dark skin, you are beautiful. If you choose to have white skin, you are just as beautiful. The choice is yours, and SkinWhite respects that choice”.
This inclusivity is refreshing and speak volumes, especially at a time when shaming and bullying is prevalent across social media. Bashers and haters abound online with no agenda but to shame in all forms and ways – body-shaming, hair-shaming, race-shaming, gender-shaming, and yes, also skin-shaming. “This is precisely the stigma that we wish to change. Skin color should not be about one being better than the other”, adds Pam Sulit, Splash Corporation’s VP for Marketing.
“White and dark are both beautiful.” confirms Rachel Villanueva, Creative Director of Petch & Partners, the creative agency that created this campaign for SkinWhite. She continues, “It’s about time that dark skin and white skin get the same adoration and acknowledgment.”
So at the end of the day, it’s all about your choice isn’t it? If you want to be lighter you can choose safe products like SkinWhite to achieve it. If you love your complexion then as SkinWhite has proclaimed they also respect that. No need to go and buy a product you don’t need right? So maybe equal respect is due whether you patronize or don’t patronize the brand.
Personally, I use SkinWhite Teen Tropical Bliss because I LOVE the scent. No judgement for using a product that’s meant for teens right? 😉
