When you first find out the sex of your baby, you immediately go out and start buying clothes and decorations for their little room. As they grow, their room decor changes from baby to big kid. Once they reach that age of walking, talking, and having their own personality, it’s time to change their room again!

Kids grow up so fast that if you blink too many times, you’ll miss it. When kids are around the age of three or four, their minds are like sponges. Anything you want them to pick up and learn, three and four years of age is the time for them to learn it. They’ll even pick up and learn the thing you don’t want them to learn if you’re not careful!

I say all that to say, the age range of three and four are their formative years and it’s really when their personalities form and you can somewhat see what kind of little person they’re going to be. You can’t tell when they’re babies, but as they grow, this is when you really need to pay attention, especially in regards to decorating their room. Take a look at these basic essentials that every child needs to have in their room that will not only make their room look good, but it will also teach them life lessons.

Book Case

Every child needs a bookcase in their room… it encourages reading, whether they’ll be homeschooled or attend public/private schools. Kids tend to accumulate lots of books from the time they’re born. Some mothers-to-be even ask for a donation of one children’s book at their baby showers. If an interest in books is noticed, your child will accumulate more books and will need a nice place to put them.

Now, depending on the size of your child’s room, you want to pick a nice size bookcase that won’t overcrowd the room and make it feel small. There are all kinds of different bookcases out there to choose from, you just have to figure out which one will work best for your child’s room. When you’re away from home, there are also reading apps that will help your child to read.

Something Symbolizing Their Interests

Whether your daughter loves unicorns and stars, or your son loves cars and sports, you’ll want to get some kind of decor piece that matches their interests. You can hang up curtains that are full of different types of trains or find patterned pillows that match their personality. Whichever route you decide to take, make sure it’s fitting for their room, but most importantly, make sure it’s fitting for them.

Toy Box

A toy box can be a really cute accessory in children’s rooms, but it can also teach them to clean their room by putting their toys away. Cleaning our room is a chore that adults don’t like to do so it’s best to instill this habit in them while they’re young… they may not like it, but it’ll be instilled in them for so long that doing the chore won’t bother them because they’ve been doing it since they were little!

Mirror

Your little one needs a full-size mirror in their room as well. It’s not to teach vanity, but more so for appearance. Having a mirror in their room will help them learn about the basics of dressing. You know how kids will throw on anything and think it’s acceptable to go out of the house wearing it. Kids will throw on a shirt and cowboy boots and are immediately ready to go to the park!

You can help them with that with the use of a mirror. If your child puts on pants and a shirt, you can let them stand in front of the mirror and kind of go through a checklist with them. Ask them what article of clothing is missing from their body. If they say shoes, you can praise them for noticing their missing shoes. If they don’t notice, redirect them and ask them to think really hard. You may have to just tell them what’s missing, but a mirror is a great learning tool for them.
