As a rule I stay away from pawning. As much as possible I avoid letting go of any valuables. It goes back to my younger days when we would have to pawn my mom’s jewelry to get by. It happened quite often. Too many to count. That’s why I associate the image of being desperate and in dire need with jewellery pawning. Renewing the interest every month for several months because we couldn’t afford to get it back just yet was a reminder of how hard times were.
It also felt like we were at the mercy of these pawnshops that tried as best as possible to give us the lowest appraisal rate possible so they could earn more at our expense. It all had a very unsavory feel to it. Being a helpless teen and watching your parent unable to handle the day to day responsibilities was difficult to take.
Now as an adult myself, and being a single mom of three at that there have been desperate times. Had I known some of the things that I recently learned my attitude towards pawning would have been surely different.
Gaining Confidence
For instance did you ever think of pawning as an investment? I sure didn’t but it turns out that some successful business owners took advantage of what pawning had to offer to grow their business and more.
With the right pawnshop and self discipline you can actually consider it a prudent business technique. At a recent gold appraisal workshop I attended with Cebuana Lhuillier I was able to learn how to value jewellery which has empowered me to be more knowledgeable and confident in pawning. I can now identify gold from white gold and rose gold to even determining karats.
One of the fears I always had was pawning jewellery that had sentimental value at such a low appraisal rate but this was quickly allied when I learned that Cebuana Lhuillier has a higher appraisal rate of up to 30%. This means a bigger take home pay for us.

Subok narin eto noong need operation ni eldest. We tried several pawnshop pero ang baba until last resort is the Cebuana nearby. Mataas appraisal rate nila plus may paying scheme pa sa interest na pede irenew kapag di nakakabayad bago matubos. Laking tulong Kapag medyo down kami at may need, mabilis lang dumukot sa alahas at isanla kesa manghiram ka sa malalaki ang tubo. Safe pa ang alahas mo kay Cebuana at di gaya sa iba kapag checking na ng gold binabawasan nila.
Yes mommy, laking tulong din pag walang wala ng choice. Pero I also learned investment siya somehow. Thanks for sharing mommy!
