This coming Chinese New Year, the Chan Lim Family of Artists and Students will be exhibiting artworks at SM City North EDSA. Over 100 hand-painted lanterns are on display until February 11 at The Block Atrium.
The extensive collection of lanterns is the first activity for the Chinese New Year festivities. Lanterns are a traditional Chinese decoration and the students of the Chan Lim Family of Artists and Students have beautifully created some wonderful designs for our viewing pleasure.
The first exhibit was held in 1995 at SM Megamall and 21 years later their strong partnership continues.
The Chan Lim Family of Artists and Students exhibits more than 1,000 artworks every year in different venues across the country. They have been actively involved in the arts for more than four decades.
The family patriarch, Chan Lim, has dabbled in Western art, specializing in oil and watercolor. The Chan Lim siblings Alex, Felix, Rolex, and Jolex are all engineers by profession and are actively engaged with multinational companies. They are one of the few remaining notable Chinese brush painting artists in the Philippines. Art classes are conducted in their family studio located in Pasig.
Mr Alex Chan Lim was present at the opening of the exhibit and did an on the spot painting demonstration.
Surprisingly, none of the Chan Lim family members have degrees related to arts. As Mr Alex Chan Lim said, painting is a desire and is something he makes time for.
The Grace Christian College Chinese Orchestra performed at the opening of the exhibit.
After Mr Alex Chan Lim’s demonstration, we were able to try our hand at painting. It’s not as simple as it looks! We were helped out and taught different methods in creating bamboo, leaves and flowers.

Beautiful creations. I don’t have any idea how Chinese celebrate their new year. Maybe it’s time for me to know it. I will try to visit this at SM North Edsa.
Wow this is interesting! There’s something about arts and painting that makes me feel happy whenever i see them… I wish i could find time to visit… His works are amazing!
Something To look forward to doing on a weekend- visit the exhibit. My kids have talents in drawing but sadly this mama doesn’t give them enough inspiration to pursue it. This exhibit will definitely give them the boost. Thanks for this.
Amazing! Those hand-painted lanterns are so nice! I know its not as easy as it looks. Its a pity I dont have the talent for drawing or painting.
Galing! Lanterns as artworks. This is truly function and creativity combined.
Asian/Chinese art is so beautiful. 🙂 Kung Hei Fat Choi! 🙂
Wow! They’re so creative.. Imagine what they can make pa if they have formal art courses pa ano? amazing talent. I’m sure my husband will love the exhibit . .
Those are very beautiful artworks. I should take my eldest daughter there. She’s really fond of Asian Art, most especially Japanese Anime. I’d love for her to learn about Chinese Art and Zodiacs too, coz our family is kinda superstitious (Feng Shui geeks). =)
This post just reminded me to go back to my first love…. painting! [wink*] i have heard about this family of painters before, One of their relatives is a doctor at Metropolitan Hospital where I used to be assigned as a medrep. Anyways, it’s so nice and inspirational to know a family of artists. I hope my daughter grow up to be one as well.
