There can never be too much learning and this is what I impressed upon my daughter when I had her try out MSA’s Merlene Math program. Although she has a quick head when it comes to Math (sadly not through my doing but Oliver’s, 1 point for him), the Merlene Math concept was one that I felt Kianna would highly benefit from.
If you’re familiar with Singapore Math, Merlene Math is a program that teaches this approach but in a Philippine context. This program is available in MSA Centers from Grades 1-6. We decided to have Kianna have Merlene Math sessions at MSA Fairview.
The program focuses on problem solving which promotes critical thinking which I think is highly beneficial and applicable to everyday life. Oftentimes we ask ourselves if the math we’ve learned is even something that we use but in this case it can and does.
Kianna was pretty eager to attend her session but she laughed when I took her picture! She just brought a pencil with her and she was all set to go. They provide the worksheets and assignments as well to be brought home and passed on the following session.
Aside from Merlene Math, MSA provides tutorials, Philippine Science NCE Review, Smart Reader National Medical Admission Test, and Homeschool Support.
So far Kianna, has found it very helpful. She has actually been able to apply what she’s learned and since she’s graduating this year it’ll be a really big help to get her on the honor roll and for her NAT exam.
We have quite a few more sessions to go and I’ll be sharing more about it soon.

Indeed, classes like these are very helpful for kids! I can still remember how Math and English classes helped a lot in my development as a child (though eventually, I lost interest in Math, haha! Ouch).
Where do you take the classes? My brother and nephews live in Taglibaron and homeschool. Salamat, Po.
Kianna goes to SM Fairview for her classes. YOu can find the list of branches here: http://msainstitute.com/branches/
Ooooh, we’ve tried MSA last year – and recognised the Singapore system nga. However, we decided to shift to Saxon Math this year and our son’s responding well to it better than he did with the other methodologies, so we’re sticking to it for now. 🙂 But will keep MSA in mind.
Is this like a course/program that you need to finish for a certain period of time? I would love to suggest this to my sister. My sister and her husband are both working so they don’t really have time to tutor their kids. This is perfect for their kids.
Hi Alaine, Yes, they offer different trial periods though. It’s best to visit the nearest branch to also assess the child.
Would like to enroll my daughter here. Nowadays kasi, there ar ekids na super takot sa Math and super tinatanggihan.
was never a math fan but I’d like my boy to be good in it! This is very helpful and informative!
Hello Ms. Louisa, do you happen to know if they offer summer classes for 3 year old kids? Thanks ^^
Hi Yvonne, yes they have a playschool for the little ones. You can inquire at the branch nearest you.
Before I was able to do a collaboration with Mathemagis in Quezon City. I really like the concept of Singapore Math. Good thing that there are now more centers open to teach Singapore Math.
Review / tutorial centers are very helpful nowadays when school lessons such as math are getting complicated. This is also a nice way of assessing the child when it comes to his/her academic capabilities.
