The one thing that I miss from my childhood are libraries. When I was younger I would rather spend a day at the library buried in a book than anywhere else.

In the Philippines, libraries are a rare site. I know of several libraries but it’s not as accessible as it should be that’s why initiatives such as Little Free Library are an excellent way to get kids to read. Making books accessible is one of the best ways to gain interest.

Little Free Library has been around since 2009 but has only been launched here in the Philippines this year. Around the world there are about 25,000 registered Little Free Libraries.

It all started with Todd Bol of Hudson, Wisconsin, who built a model of a one room schoolhouse as a tribute to his mother, a former school teacher who loved to read. He filled it with books and put it on a post in his front yard. His neighbors and friends loved it and he built several more and gave them away. Each one had a sign that said FREE BOOKS. And thus it began…

Ms Gigi Custodio of Fairview Terraces opened the ceremony by sharing how Ayala Malls supports literacy and the potential that Little Free Library can bring.

Launched with the kids of MSA Whiz Kids, Todd Bol and the teachers and students of MSA had a storytelling session.

Alexa Ilacad of Star Magic also read a story to the kids and through that story shared the love of a mother and the sacrifices she makes for her children. It got me a bit teary eyed…

One of the kids from MSA Whiz Kids read a story about animals and Jael enjoyed that very much.
