I’m a huge fan of The Hunger Games and although I have a bit of a love hate thing going on with Katniss I admire her skills as an archer. I’ve always wanted to try archery and I was excited to visit Kodanda Archery Range with Bastian which made it even more fun. He also likes the book series and wanted to try the much talked about sport.

Kodanda [ko*dan*da]  is Sanskrit meaning “He who has a bow.” Lately, archery has become a popular sport. Aside from The Hunger Games, The Walking Dead has made it awe inspiring whenever Daryl takes down those zombies one arrow after another.

Kodanda Archery Range has been open since 2013 and is gaining a steady interest. The range is modest in size with seven-lanes and is fully-air conditioned. It’s located in Makati Cinema Square and a few floors down, hidden to the side of the stairs.

We were there early and had the archery range to ourselves. Coach Linda and Coach Ronna May assisted us and taught us the range rules and etiquette. We were also taught how to wear gear to correct posture and stance. There’s a bit of equipment needed to ensure your safety but it’s well worth it.

The belt provided holds your arrows but can also hold your gadgets. Just don’t forget them like I almost did! If you have long hair you have to tie it up so it doesn’t get in your face or distract you.

We were guided on how to stand, aim and shoot. It takes quite a bit of muscle power on both arms as you balance the bow and try to aim your target.

We were also taught how to properly remove the arrows and there’s only a certain time when you can retrieve your arrows to avoid injury. In archery you have to practice safety as you can easily get hurt if not from firing the arrows then while retrieving them.

I had less shots because I didn’t want to strain myself too much. I’ve learned the hard way what happens to me when I push myself to the limit!
